Abounding Love

Philippians 1:9
“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment”
Rob and I saw Fireproof last night and it was sooooo good! I was able to control the tears, but thought I had a temporary goiter due to the increasing lump in my throat that would grow at the oddest moments in the movie. It was pure in its message and straight on regarding marriage as a covenant. I nearly came out of my seat with a wave offering to God over the term “covenant” being used. When was the last time a movie used that word? Awesome. I’m proud of those Kendrick boys from Albany and their church doing a good thing for the glory of God! Way to go!
Today’s continuation of yesterday’s verses in Philippians fits right in with the theme of the movie. For your sake I will try to not apply it to just marriage, but to life in Christ.
If you haven’t read Philippians 1:9, go back up to the top and read it.
Abounding love…that word “abound” in the passage means to have more than enough. And if that is not enough, Paul continues to say that he prays their love for each other would abound more and more. Not only is it full and overflowing, but it’s REALLY overflowing and then some. It’s over the top.
But, it’s not just sentimental love. This is love that abounds more and more in real knowledge and all discernment.
Knowledge here is that of knowing God. Discernment here is godly discernment. Tina Turner might sing, “What’s love got to do with it?” I’d like to turn that around and sing, “What do these have to do with love?”
Knowledge of God (knowledge that leads to obedience – heart knowledge and not head knowledge) and godly discernment lead to loving God and in turn loving your brothers and sisters in Christ.
The more you know God and His ways, the more you see what love of the brethren is all about. And we should pray with Paul that it overflows for our families, our churches, our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Lord, may our love for You overflow more and more so we can have a love that overflows for each other! Amen.
