“Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.”
I hope I’m not jumping the gun on our Hebrews study. By the time we get to this chapter it will be time for school to end almost. Thanksgiving will be long over. Just a minute ago I typed in “give thanks” in my Bible software and many references popped up in the NASB translation. Most were in the Psalms. About at the end of the list was this reference in Hebrews.
I got so excited! When I read this I could picture a cornucopia in my mind with fruit spilling out. And beautiful fruit at that! There’s no blemish, no soft spots, no rotten parts. It is the epitome of a Thanksgiving table centerpiece.
When I go back and read that verse again, I see that God desires we offer up praise to Him through Jesus and what He has done for us. It is continuous, not a once a year thing. That reminds me of what my pastor said yesterday. Thanksgiving is an attitude and we should be thankful all the time rather than just focusing on it one day a year.
We want the fruit of our lips to be thanking Him. It is pleasing to Him. There’s nothing worse than rotting vegetation. The smell is putrid and to touch the slime…ick. What comes out of our mouths more often, putrid grievances or pleasing thanks?
Let us think on that and be about thanking our Maker. Let us throw out the habit of complaining, bitterness, slander, etc. Let us use our mouths to lift up thanks to God for His many attributes and what He has done through His Son, Jesus Christ.
