Philippians 1:9-11
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment,
so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;
having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
The last time I meditated on this selection, we concluded with “abounding love”. I was reminded that abounding love for God overflows in heart knowledge and godly discernment in loving others in Christ.
Verse 10 of this passage (in bold above) starts with “so that”. It’s a term of conclusion based on what comes before it in Scripture. We could read it like this (my paraphrase): Then, if my love for God is overflowing and I have pursued in Scripture truth about Him, my love for Him turns head knowledge into heart knowledge in relating to my brothers and sisters in Christ. I am able to recognize excellence that leads to sincerity and blamelessness. Therefore, I’m able to be sincere in loving others and blameless when I will stand before Christ. Godly discernment is beneficial in my dealings with others.
My prayer is this. God, give me Your discernment in all things, especially in relating to others in the Body. It’s not easy and if I relate to them under the control of my flesh, that is not of You and I will mess it up. So, I seek Your face, Your mind, Your wisdom. I not only seek it, but I desire it. Thank You that I can even ask for it knowing that You will give it. May I bless You in my dealings with others and not for my sake, but for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
